The FurlongŪ Straight Stem Modular System

JRI introduce an additional range to the Modular System, manufactured in High Nitrogen Stainless Steel. This extension to the product range also includes a 5mm lateral offset option for both the primary and revision ranges in order to allow for a more exact replication of the patients normal anatomy. High nitrogen stainless steel is regarded as the preferred material for femoral stems used with cement. This material has greater fatigue strength and corrosion resistance over the conventional stainless steel and the higher Young's modulus of elasticity, compared to titanium alloy, decreases stresses in the cement mantle.

The Furlong® Modular System

The Furlong® Modular System for use with cement is based on the time proven Furlong® Straight Stem Monobloc prosthesis. Since 1979 tens of thousands of Furlong® Straight Stems have been implanted with predictable good results. The stem design has remained unchanged since its inception.

The stem ensures the benefits of "state-of-the-art" cementing techniques:-

  • Straight
  • Collarless
  • Double Tapered
  • Polished

Published results(1) demonstrate the efficacy of the Furlong® Straight Stem design, a success rate of 97.3% over a five year period. These results compare very favourably against other cemented prostheses used under similar conditions such as Charnley and Howse II demonstrating failure rates of 3% and 5% respectively over a five year period.(2&3)

These results are particularly relevant as the total hip replacements were carried out by many surgeons at different levels. Often results are quoted only from specialist centres which are not reproducible at regional hospitals.

Thus the Furlong® Straight Stem Modular System as a technically straightforward but comprehensive system provides good reproducible results at reasonable cost.

The femoral stem is available in High nitrogen Stainless Steel, which is regarded as the preferred material for femoral stems used with cement.

The 12 / 14 taper allows use of a multiplicity of femoral heads, made of ceramic or stainless steel. The use of a ceramic head decreases friction and wear by a factor of ten.

The multiple choice is attractive to the surgeon as is the lower stocking necessity to hospitals and clinics. The variety of cups available add to the versatility of the system.

Acetabular cups are available for use with cement or coated with Supravit® Hydroxy-apatite Ceramic, which does not require cement, thus allowing cement/cement free hybrids.
