TriboFit® Acetabular Buffer components are made from polycarbonate-urethane (PCU), a compliant, hydrophilic material. The use of this new PCU material along with the TriboFit component design has three potential advantages over existing materials used for joint reconstruction:

  • PCU is about 70 times less stiff than ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and it's stiffness replicating natural cartilage.
  • Laboratory studies have shown that because the PCU material allows for fluid film lubrication similar to cartilage, it has improved wear resistance compared to UHMWPE.
  • The improved wear resistance allows for the TriboFit® Acetabular Buffer to be just 3mm thick. This allows for conservation of acetabular bone and allows for a larger, similar to normal anatomical femoral head size, improving joint stability.
